February 2013:
We've set our climbing schedule for the next 18 months. First stop is Mt Elbrus in Russia, followed by Mt Aconcagua in Agrentina and then close behind is a return trip to Alaska to summit Mt McKinley. Check out the plans in detail on The 7 Summits page of this web site.
9 Feb, 2013
Hugh and Gavin were joined by James Castrission for a days canyoning in the Blue Mountains National Park. The plan was for an early start out of Leura so as to be out of the canyon before storms forecast for later could impact the trip.
By 7:30 they were away from the van and it was 8:00am when they tied in for the first abseil. 11 more abseils brought them to the valley floor for lunch. It had been a very intense 5 hours but great fun.
The walk back to the van was expected to be an hour and a half. 6 hours later they emerged at the road end.
Prior to departing for our attempt on Mt Kilimanjaro training at the Sydney Altitude clinic was a regular for us, and will likely to continue later in the year as we get closer to our trip to Argentina to summit Mt Aconcagua where we will be surpassing our altitude persnal bests.
Mt Elbrus - Russia
Roll on August 2013. We've set our targets for the next 18 months and the first objective will see us heading to Russia in August for an attempt on Mt Elbrus. It's new territory for us so there's a lot of planning to complete in the next 2-3 months. And of course there's room for a little bit of sight seeing as well.
First asthmatic to complete the 7 summits !
Here's a future headline that puts our 7 summits challenge in perspective
Hugh is asthmatic and through the use of an asthma management plan and preventive medication he leads a very active outdoor life. He's a great example of JUST GET OUT AND DO IT !
In September Hugh completed a climb of The Nose in just on a day and then spent more time completing climbs in the High Sierras on the Hulk and other big walls.
There's a photo album on the aussie7summits facebook page.
On the 16th July at 6:25am the team from aussie7summits reached the summit of Mt Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.
The team consisting of Hugh Ward, Bridie Campbell, Gavin Marshall, Colin Lynch and Kendra Magyar had commenced their final climb to the summit (5,895 metres) from Barafu Hut at 4,600 metres elevation just after 12:00am assisted by three guides from African Walking Company.
The final trek to the summit was completed in ideal weather conditions that provided excellent 360 degree views on arrival.
Over the preceding 6 days the team had completed an access walk via the Shira Plateau route.
This all started back in May 2011 when we attempted to summit Mt McKinley in Alaska but were forced back by bad weather. At the time it was disappointing to get shut down and have to return home without a summit completed.
Almost immediately we started thinking about a comeback plan and true to form it is bolder and more demanding.
We decided to challenge ourselves to complete the 7 Summits!
We are committed, we have three summit attempts planned for this year, Kosciusko that we've summitted in April, Mt Kilimanjaro the we sumiited in July and Aconcagua in Argentina in planned for December.
A canyon located near Wentworth Falls in the Blue Mountains. Graded easy-moderate.
This "dry" canyon south of Sydney is in the Bungonia National Park. It is rated as difficult and consists of 3-10 abseils depending on your climbing skills and confidence.
A day out at the local crag. A welcome chance to get outside after a weeks rain.
Kendra, Bridie and Gavin head into the Blue Mountains for a days climbing. It's a 90 minute walk, 3 rap's down to the base and then a climb back out. Fantastic weather as you can see.
Easter Weekend and 4 days out of the city in a unique National Park north west of Sydney
Hugh makes a return trip to the Warrumbungles to try out speed climbing!
Hugh and Gavin head ot the Tararua Ranges, north of Wellington in New Zealand for 3 days walking.
